Personally i think MJ is the greatest entertainer of all time. Comparing Shampain to Thriller, which is THE greatest music video of all time, is surely a compliment.

Well 9 days out from release the Shampain video has been viewed over 121000 times on Youtube. Yesterday it was the 5th most watched vid on Youtube. A success? I think so.

Now to "Bowie-Diamond". You may make some reasonable points, but insulting everyone here is a bit much. You mocked Marina on her supposed lack of originality. Well what about your online name. Not very original unless your David Bowie himself. Which you may be, so IF you are David Bowie I take that back.

Shampain is a great song. It has got Marina noticed everywhere. The video is doing the same. Marina admits the Thriller influence, but as mentioned by Livethoughtful, the actual technical similarities are few and far between. I think the Shampain video was meant to highlight the lonely isolation of someone who has overdone it at a party etc and wandered off in their own world. The dancers who are a bit ripped up and scary are all in her head, and dissapear when she wakes up to reality in the morning, and shock horror, she's been eating burgers, something she'd never normally do. What the hell was Thriller about?

Marina wasn't even born when Thriller came out. So she would not have absorbed the hype and everything that went with the Thriller album. She would have had to pick that up long after the event when all the hype was long gone. So where's the real influence?

Basically I'd watch Marina and her video clips, and listen to her music any day. I can't say the same for Michael Jackson, and I had his album back in 84. Marina is far superior to Michael Jackson IMO.

    A ha
@bowie_diamond The arrival of the truth-fairy
That's David Bowie who started his career as an Anthony Newley impersonator, who released Pin Ups, who covered Cat People, who paid homage to countless film artists on his videos and could be called chameleon like in his own way ...Can, Neu, Velvet Underground, Burroughs for poetic technique. Eno for Oblique strategies ...the list could go on further. the guy picked up a lot of trends before they became more widely known. Kudos to him.

Perhaps you had another Bowie in mind of course. The knife guy perhaps.

As for Thriller - err... let's see .... no male character, no werewolf, no obvious zombies, no cinema, no house, no car, no forest, no mass street scene. no tangible threat ...so if you think it was an imitation of Thriller, you'd probably be right to say it fell short. Possibly it is a nod to it, just as it is to Vienna, Don't you want me and several other early 80s videos.

    kreuzweise.

@Bowie_Diamond too much* and I pride myself on being exceedingly objective and blunt. Any views expressed are the opinions felt. It's one thing to claim objectivity, another to specify a group of people to be 'ass-kissers'. If this is our view, then we will express it. If we love what has been done, then thats cool by us.

It pays hommage to Michael Jackson's thriller, this is blatant. But isn't it influence? Influence like any other? The influence of drinking? The feeling one gets when they can spin, and spin, and spin - and forget that they're spinning?

She was blatantly inspired, not ripping off.

Noice on the Bowie front though. Bowie is the King.

As an artist who prides herself on being inventive and original - I was SHOCKED to see such a blatant rip off of Thriller. It started off promising but went down hill from there. All the video's up to this point have been good but this sucked. 'A Grave-yard of bad dreams' I couldn't word it better myself.

I love Marina but let's get some objective views on here, you all kiss way to much ass.

p.s I'm seeing her live in November

A sharp Latin dance number in the middle of this and maybe a shot of Geoffrey Firmin coming into view in the background would provoke some thought. Mebbe not.

Unbelievable Marina. Love the way you look a little drunk. That's what I call a performance. So much real life - the end of the video. Now I'm worry about you cause it's dangerous touring the States with many gigs in small venues or bars ...
Take care with the bourbon whiskey available 24 hours the day :-)

This video will get you noticed by many many more people Marina. A case in point. The video has been out only 22 hrs and has been downloaded from youtube over 27000 times. The non video version of Shampain has been up for 6 months and hasn't quite made 100000 downloads. At this rate the video will be viewed more than the non video version in about 5 days maybe less. All the best. I think the afterburners have been ignited with this video. :)
