NOW REAL LIFE HAS NO APPEAL.

Without you diamonds, everything can become nothing . And with you, nothing has become everything.

I speak with honesty, not false flattery, when I say that my fans are some of the most intellectual people. I read your letters and talk to you and I feel so full of life at the fact that I can meet people who I actually have things in common with. Through writing music. I never tailor-wrote songs for the 'masses' and I never will. You must ask yourself, do you want to be 'popular' for the sake of being popular but to essentially cause no change.. "What is it to be popular" if it does not create a positive influence? Meeting you all recently has empowered me and reinforced my thinking. I'd prefer to have 10,000 intelligent, questioning, fans full of life than 10 million unthinking, colourless ones.

Much of pop music has no meaning because that is what media outlets think will embed and sell more quickly. It is insulting to us as a public to assume that our 'simple brains' cannot "HACK" music which isn't about budweiser and clubs. That is why the true artists, the visionaries who have creative control over everything, who live and breathe and die for it, quite literally, have died- or perhaps are never heard? Or are not born anymore because popular culture is made up of such empty, dishonest substance?

I will be here for a long time and the game will be a long one. If I contribute anything at all to music, it will be to bring back true meaning to pop. Not everything has to be auto-tuned garbage about being in "Up in Da Club" to qualify as listenable and get on the radio. Yes- we need light music to be carefree and dance to; But eventually, one becomes what one is fed. And you can't eat Cheetos forever. Truth

I want to be a part of peoples lives and I want the same people to be a part of mine. If you cannot make an impact, then what is the point in anything that you do at all?

I created the name "Marina and the Diamonds" 5 years ago and I never envisaged a character, pop project, band or solo artist. I saw a simple group made up of many people who had the same hearts. A space for people with similar ideals who could not fit in to life's pre-made mold. I was terribly awkward for a long time! I really craved to be part of one thing because I never felt too connected to anybody and now I feel I have that all around me.

I have talked about pop and illusion and stardom before and though it may be far easier to be driven by such rewards, I cannot be. And that is sometimes very confusing for me. At least I am being honest.

I'm afraid i will not give people the 'glamorous' image. I am not exactly a rep for stardom or perfection and I do not want to be. I want to contribute to helping people confront what they are when masks are stripped away. Not only physical masks but psychological ones; the ones imprinted on us by media and so on. What is 'the perfect' life, how to 'be happy', what should 'make you happy', what is good, what is bad, what is twisted, what is normal, what is 'beautiful' and what is ugly.

I suppose it is time to get fat, start wearing no make up and bin bags again (jOKING- Kinda). I feel like I have regressed in to typical popville with all the TVs and things I have to get made up for. It's not good to wear a lot of make-up. Where did natural beauty go. Confidence and self acceptance are achieved when you are on your own, without your crutches and your guise. One of life's common battles of man is self-acceptance and aforementioned 'masks' seem to contradict and slow that process down a little.. Now the diamonds exist.. they aren't imaginary anymore. And I am a very fortunate person. It scares me sometimes to think of what I would have become if I hadn't made it, as this.

I am planning an American tour and a also new European one for later in the year (Greece, I'm coming to you if it's the last thing I do!!). And... the video for "Oh No!"... is coming soon...

No matter how big and powerful an ego one may have, be it a politician, artist, pop star or activist.. it is the truth that you cannot change the world. It is too big and people do not care enough to make a change, en masse. But you can change your own world.

thank you, so much, for making the music you make and speaking the words in your heart. my infatuation with you has become full blown love, and your music articulates all the feelings and thoughts i have that i couldn't form into anything cohesive myself. you are beautiful, inside and out, and i'm eager to for more of your music, and you. xo

Marina, really appreciate this message and think you can sell music without selling out to American propaganda. You're absolutely talented and fashionable - people will naturally draw to you. Being an American myself, I know our culture is full of lazy thinkers and terrible lyrics, but you're a breathe of fresh air. Keep doing what you're doing - wish you the best in your endeavors.

Hang on ... let's be honest. I don't think I've ever seen Marina *not* look glamorous. She could wear an outfit made of old tesco bags stuck together with parcel tape and she would still look glamorous. Is that not the truth?

Still, the post made me think back to when I was in my mid teens (how long ago does that feel?!), before Baywatch's Pammie arrived on my TV screen and before Loaded was even a twinkle in James Brown's eye. To a time before the vacuum-packed Barbie look was de rigeur.

When post-rave superclub/ibiza culture arrived mid-nineties the look was basically about one thing (sex). Hip-hop videos went mainstream a little after this. Since then, pretty much everything has succumbed to this. Made me think just how unsexy it all is now (ok being honest it's still a bit sexy for lots of the boys out there). But it really is just boring. Sex is the subtext of the u.s.p. for everything now. Marketing budgets are 98% 'hot girls' and 2% inspired/original ideas.

So the funny thing about Marina saying she isn't glamorous is that she is **SO** glamorous. But the thing that's wonderful about it is that it's unabashed natural unaugmented femininity. And as much as Marina is outspoken she is still totally feminine ... and that combination of beguiling personality, lively intellect, savage (let's face it) wit, and (it cannot be denied) godesslike curviness is about as glamorous as you'll ever see anywhere. Period.

Forget Reality TV ... just look around you. There are real flesh-and-blood not-plastic-coated people very near you right now. They can actually talk, laugh and do humorous impressions (some of them can even juggle if you ask nicely). Go on, put down your copy of Heat, shut down MarieClaire.com, get out there and connect with someone.

Marina, being able to live in this world, with all the positive and negative events that usually occur to many of us, I am truly happy to say that you make my day a little bit more interesting...oh no! I mean...fun! Really, I do not expect you to understand what it is that I want to say, hell, even I don't know that. But if you are reading this, I just wanted to let you know that I have never before been so influenced by an artist and the fact that you are working hard for something you love is amazing in my eyes!

    Thank you for being you!

And just because I can talk an Eskimo out of his snow suit in a snowstorm doesn't mean I'm always right. In the end it bears down to values. If you like to be genuine, be genuine. If you want fame, be famous. Don't hate me because I'm one of the few people who can see the nihilistic truth, love the fact that it's okay to want something just because you want it, that desire can be its own justification.

I think it's just a precaution so people will have a reason to like her, as if they'd need one once they heard Family Jewels. Hollywood girls use their looks but I think she's sort of doing the same thing with authenticity. Everyone is looking for an effective way to get on top.

One driven enough to get a record deal is certain to be driven by both money and fame, probably not exclusively but surely significantly. As I said once in a LiveStudio interview observation note blog, as long as one is honest about their dishonesty, authenticity - to me - seems relatively intact. Who gets the prize for being most authentic anyway? So what, 50 years from now some people sitting around a pub could all agree she was the most legitimate recording artist? 50 years after that, then what? It's just not worth sacrificing the moment for the burden of self-righteousness, not to me. I want what she wants, whatever shape or form that may fashion. What drew me never was about her authenticity, more who she was a person and her mind and what she does with it in the music. She's rare. She felt like I tend to feel. I couldn't believe it, and the way the music reflects this as a whole, speaks for itself.

What matters to me, and I'd bet my life most of humanity is the same way, is the feeling. I don't care if artists hire someone to create the melody, or even if they invented the words themselves (though that'd be nice if one wanted to feel a connection to the artist), or whatever. If I like your music and I like you, there's a good chance I'm going to buy. Would it be more authentic to just give away music? Probably. But that's not how the world works. If you want to function normally in society, you must earn money. Corporations do go a bit far and want money just for the conquest of being the biggest. Ma-reen-uh is hardly comparable to that. She might inquire into who might be trying to profit from her name without her permission, but that's just good business sense. It's not perfect PR, but it's good business sense. She's not siphoning tax money. She's being given pay for creating a product that people want to buy. If we apply ourselves, I'm sure most of us could be so lucky to some degree.

That being said, what I really want is for her to wake up everyday with a soft smile and just feeling totally amazing, peaceful, and contented - almost in love with herself for everything she's done so far. As long as I like what she's about, and I do, and sense my support means something to her underneath it all, I'll always want to protect and be a part of it. This is a good place she's made, and whether congregating here or potentially one day at a concert, I'll always love the feeling of connectedness bound among those who are pulled to her. I think any one of us would want to defend Marina from anything unsavory directed at her for this reason. The music and the past and our struggles mean something to us, they help to define our personalities and who we are. They define our lives so any way she choose to express that similarity to us is entirely her choice in my view. She should be free. She sets such a good example to everybody already, living life chiefly on her terms like this.

I'm looking forward to the America campaign and I'm saying this because I'm prepared to brave the rough terrain in the rare event she would decide to resort to low blows. I don't want her to think she would lose support if ever she decided to use a new method to better herself. I think the important thing to me is for her to win. I see my something about myself in aspects of who she is, so her success says good things about me. As long as she never loses sight of what really matters, being true to herself and being happy, I'll approve. So there's my honest truth.

OMFG - you are so right about those Cheetos - it's on Youtube so it must be true. More below

"I know exactly what I want"

Fripp - worth looking up, a scarily intense man who can carry on with interviews with such focus he does not err or umm once over 10 minutes .or ever Some of his work looking at starting in the music business is on yotube.Weird. He seems to interview himself almost. Having seen his crafty guitarists' work live he is a sound teacher who has worked with some musical legends and makes a living, keeping musical integrity, but perhaps not making megabucks, ..hit albums but not hit singles. I just love his Wimbourne drawl anyway. He is a guy who knows exactly what he wants with supreme drive.

    Daniel Levitin -

His books on music and its neurological effects may appeal given your professed interest in psychology.
"World in 6 Songs" and "This is your brain on music : understanding a human obsession" both are accessible and worth a few minutes/hours whiling away the time in hotels. Nominated for this and that.

"it will be to bring back true meaning to pop"

Green Gartside is worth looking at in this as his trilogy on the 80s did just that with a richness of meaning in his lyrics and superb production values. He came from not so far from you and his writing, maybe over clever at times - how many know what the Tupamaros are, how many read Derrida? - pondered the nature love songs, of pop itself and his role within it. I'd say he succeeded though they were not to everyone's liking. Great voice though - quite unique. Much sampled work. Due for a cover -lol.

    "you can't eat Cheetos forever"

It's as well you warned us as there are crazy gangs./swarms of these - it's true ...in SF there was a huge ball which rolled down the hill and just squished a whole family in their wake.

be ever watchful for those pesky Cheetos critters... they could be grouping anywhere!! theorangeunderground youtube channel has the lowdown.

    ever thoughtful

Tell that to the people of Greece, or Thailand, or the many recent international attempts to break the Gaza blockade. They seem to have other ideas. Mass movements are our only hope, but nobody said it would be easy.
